People like to say that the Millennials are the most stressed out generation in the history of the world. We are pressured to always be better and better. We are surrounded by Instagram posts that make us jealous of the lives of other people. We have so many options laying in front of us, yet we don’t see the means to reach them. We look around at every turn and ask ourselves what the hell we’re doing with our lives when we see others making our own dreams, their reality.
Have you ever felt like this? Have you ever felt like there’s no way you can achieve your dreams because of whatever reason or you can’t be the best because there are already so many other people doing what you want to do?
I’ve been questioning my dreams and what I want to do with my life for the longest time. How can I become an Instagram influencer if there’s already so many more people posting better pictures and who have more followers? How can I make travel writing my job when there’s literally thousands of travel writers already out there? How can I make unique content that’ll set me apart from the rest of the creators out there?
Then I found this quote on my Google Chrome Momentum this morning:
“Use what talents you possess, the woods will be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best.” – Henry van Dyke
Let’s look at some facts right quick:
Humanity is so vast and the sheer number of creations going into the world so great that the chances of your dreams/ideas being completely unique is close to 0%. Someone, somewhere has probably already thought up your idea at some point in history. And that’s a really scary thought.

And it’s that thought that brings a lot of dreams and ideas to their untimely demise. I know it’s made me really question some of mine. The conversation with your brain usually goes something like this:

Brain: Nope, already been done.

Me: Ok ok, well what if I become a…

Brain: Are you crazy? SO many people are already doing that.

Me: Well damn. What about…

Brain: Just stop, you’re not going to think of anything original and never will.

Me: *crawls back into bed and binges on Gilmore Girls*

Well, let me tell you guys something. Your idea may not be the first to be thought of in the history of the world, but it’s the first to be thought of by you. That’s what makes it original. The fact that you can put your own personal spin on something that may have been done hundreds of time already is what makes your dreams worth pursuing. Anything that you think of, when done by you, is unique.

Like the quote says above, use the talents you have because if the only people creating are those who are “the best” at creating, then the world would be a pretty dull place.

So what are you waiting for? Go and do that thing that you’ve put on the back-shelf for years. Dust off that old journal filled with your ideas for the future. Go Google how you can fund that big idea you have for changing the world.

Go create, for the sake of creating, and the world will thank you for it.
